Our Process
a small investment makes a Big Difference!
Focused on your whole house, not just the Attic!
Our portfolio consists of these basic services: Weatherization: infiltration & duct sealing, Attic ventilation, Attic insulation and Radiant barrier. Independently, each one of these services provides important benefits, but to achieve maximum efficiency you should consider applying all of them, as they all work on different levels to prevent heat loss out of or heat gain into your home. Despite many advertising claims that a single one of these measures will provide up to 30% energy bill savings, this result is much more likely by focusing on your whole house and not just the attic.
The first step that is conducted during your initial energy audit is a blower door test which reveals the air pressure and air leakage of your home. In our experience, all homes need some improvements, regardless of when they were built!
New Technology Energy recommends that duct sealing be performed as a prerequisite before implementing attic insulation or radiant barrier. If energy efficiency techniques were clothes, then duct sealing would be your home’s underwear, which needs to be put on first before blowing insulation on top of your ducts and making them less accessible for later work. The next step in our process is to apply a radiant barrier coating to the underside of your roof deck. Our radiant barrier product will block 81% of the sun’s radiation from your roof and keep your attic, attic insulation and living space much cooler in the summer time, while also providing some benefits to prevent heat loss during the winter. Weatherization-infiltration (air sealing) is performed in parallel with the work done in the attic. With infiltration you seal all the gaps, holes and cracks of your home’s envelope. By making your home air tight you gain energy savings plus the health benefits of improved indoor air quality with less dust, pollen and other pollutants. Last but not least, we blow state of the art, fiber glass insulation and cover your entire attic, including hidden areas, with adequate levels of insulation according to recommendations from the Department of Energy. Attic insulation is performed last to prevent disturbing the material as our technicians need to work over the same area for the previous steps.
When talking about energy savings we should really be discussing heating and cooling costs, which in a typical home represent between 50 and 70% of your energy bill. We target a 40% reduction of the heating and cooling cost portion of your energy bill. It is quite easy to find out what portion of your energy bill corresponds to heating and cooling costs. For example, in homes that run their cooling systems on electricity and their heating systems on gas, just look at your your electric bill and compare your lowest bill with your highest bill during a 12 month period. Your lowest bill should be for the coldest month of the year when your AC does not run much and your highest bill should correspond to the hottest month. The difference between these two bills is your cooling cost for that month. Naturally we cannot save you money on the energy consumption of your electronics or appliances, but we can cause a major dent on the rest of your energy bill. Visit the US department of Energy.
