Weatherization
a small investment makes a Big Difference!
Weatherization-Infiltration and duct sealing is a technique used to seal the building shell or envelope of your home to make it more airtight. Thermodynamic law states that hot air is attracted and flows toward cold air. What this means to you is that during the summer time, hot air from outside is trying to infiltrate into your home and during the winter time, heated indoor air is trying to leak out of your home. When your home is properly air sealed your heating and cooling systems work less, consume less, pollute less and last longer. Various techniques are employed to weatherize a home, including caulking, weather-stripping (doors/windows) and performing a door blower and duct system test to measure the inside pressure of your home. In our experience even new or previously weatherized homes need improvements.
Infiltration is a meticulous and detail oriented process that takes a crew of our experienced technicians, hours to complete to do the job right and provide maximum benefits for you and your family. By sealing all your doors, windows, walls, attic access, light switches, electrical outlets and pipes, you will make your home much more energy efficient. When it comes to weatherization "there are no shortcuts to any place worth going." Energy Star Link
Duct sealing is another key ingredient that is included as part of our weatherization service. Each return and supply vent in your home is sealed to prevent conditioned air from being wasted and blown into the attic instead of your living space, or attic air from being pulled into your duct work through unsealed returns. Inside the attic, we inspect and make sure that all your duct work is sealed along with your HVAC units, using tape and mastic. Visit US Department of Energy.
While most people naturally gravitate toward the energy savings side of the equation, perhaps the most important and least advertised benefit of weatherization is the improved indoor air quality. Loose insulation fibers from your attic are constantly being sucked into your system and blown into your living and breathing area. What might look like dust is often a layer of old insulation fibers. This is why shortly after dusting you may find a newly formed dust film on top of your furniture. Seasonal allergy sufferers also benefit as weatherization impedes the penetration of pollen and other inhalant allergens into your home. Weatherization substantially reduces the amount of dust and allergens in your home by fixing the root cause.
